New York fashion week. Prabal Gurung spring summer 2016, new name.

Hiling from Nepal, Prabal Gurung opened his show with prayers from orange-robed monks in remembrance of the earthquakes that devastated his homeland back in April this year. Since then, he’s been diligent in fund-raising to support relief efforts through his organization Shikshya Foundation Nepal, and used his spring runway to bring further attention to the issue.

Despite his sadness for his home, Gurung expressed gratitude in a moving note that in part read: “Today is about gratitude for all the kindness. Today is about renewed faith in the goodness of humanity. Today is about celebration of the empathy exhibited. Today is about prayer and blessings for each of us here to follow our passion and make a difference.”
The collection itself was awash in shades of orange, rose and saffron and featured simple, clean shapes including slip dresses and deep-V sheaths. Brush stroke jacquards adorned flowing dresses while golden embroidery was used in a Nepalese jewelry motif. One of the standout pieces was a white cotton poplin dress with cutouts that looked laser cut but, according to show notes, was remarkably done by hand.
